Are Natural Cosmetics Safe for Children

Advertisements

You might think that this is a moot question because kids do not use cosmetics anyway. But that’s not what my friends who have kids will say. Ask any modern mother and she will tell you that her kids demand and use cosmetics when they are as young as six. But apart from the age factor, kids may use some beauty products like shampoos, conditioner, moisturizer, sun block and body lotions. So whether or not these regular and natural cosmetics are safe for children is a genuine concern that needs to be addressed.

Since awareness is growing, many people have moved from regular cosmetics to natural ones. As a parent, you tend to be overly protective and cautious when it comes to what your kids watch, eat, and in the last few years, put on their skin and hair. I think this is a very encouraging sign, and a very necessary step for parents today.

Our kids learn from us. So if we unquestioningly use regular cosmetics with a whole lot of harmful chemicals in them, they will too. But if you are using products that are made from naturally derived sources and your kids watch you scrutinizing the ingredient list, they will automatically question the claims made by big companies and will be as meticulous in their purchases as you are. Who knows? Perhaps one day, natural will be the only thing available and there will be no more chemical products in the market. And it can all start with the decisions you make for your children.

Natural Cosmetics for Kids

I am convinced that natural cosmetics are safe for your kids. But I really need to clear up a few things first – like what exactly I mean when I say ‘natural’ and why it’s so important.

In the last decade, a whole bunch of consumer awareness groups have taken their investigations into regular cosmetics to a whole new level. They have exposed some shocking truths about cosmetics manufactures, the claims made by them, and the toxicity of the ingredients used in their products.

Because of this turn of events, cosmetics companies have been forced to go natural in a bid to stay in the game. As a result, you have probably noticed that the last few years have been witness to the birth of many so-called natural products and ingredients by the big names in the industry.

While this may seem like a good thing, I’d advise you to look just a wee bit closer. If you look at the ingredient list on some “natural” products, you will still see a lot of chemical ingredients. How this can be possible, you ask. Well, there is no regulatory body that defines when a product is natural. So many companies just use a few natural ingredients here and there and print the word ‘natural’ on the packaging. The rest of the ingredients are still chemicals, and they are still harming your children’s skin, their hair, and their future health.

So while natural products are the only kind your kids should ever use, it is your responsibility as a parent to discover exactly which ones are truly natural and which ones are just talking the talk.
