I am a messy person by nature. I often leave my things lying around, sometimes not stored properly, thus leaving them prone to damage or premature wear and tear. And even though I know better, I’m rather messy with my makeup brushes too. I’ll leave them all over the place – my eye liner on the bathroom sink, my foundation brush on the dresser and my eye lash comb in the kitchen!
The problem is that I have never had one designated place where I could properly store all my brushes. I lost the pouch that my brushes came in a long time ago. If I had something to keep all my brushes in, I would be more than happy to use it and kind of grateful too. It’s a real hassle trying to remember where I left my powder brush when I’m getting late for work in the morning. A friend of mine gifted me a makeup brush roll recently and it has made my life a lot easier.
She’s a creative soul who’s really into arts and crafts and whatnot. I was so happy with the brush roll she gave me, I asked her if it was possible for someone with no artsy skills (yours truly) to make one too. Fortunately, there is. And I’m going to share with you what she shared with me.
Making Your Own Makeup Brush Roll
First, get together the things you will need – a sewing kit with needle, thread, scissors, pins and measuring tape, fabric of your choice for the holder and fabric for the lining.
Calculate exactly how many brushes you want to store in the holder as you have to measure out the fabric accordingly. What’s the biggest brush you own? Measure the length. Put all your brushes in a row at a reasonable distance from each other. Measure the breadth.
Now the length of the fabric that you cut out should be at least twice the length you measured. And the breadth should be about 10 inches more than you measured. Cut fabric and lining according to the measurements that you end up with. Sew only the bottoms together.
Now fold the bottom of the fabric in such a way that the brushes are still visible. This will be your pocket. Pin this pocket to the lining and stitch it up along the sides.
Now position the brushes in this pocket area, spaced out the way you want them. Either mark the spaces with a pencil or use pins. Now sew along the markings to create individual sub-pockets for each of your brushes. You can now sew the remaining three sides of the fabric and lining that you had left open earlier. Your brush roller is now ready.
You are now free to decorate it in any way you want. You can embroider patterns, sew on patches, or just use interesting fabric to begin with. The possibilities are endless.
You can always buy a readymade makeup brush roll or holder. But making it yourself means that you can customize it exactly to your tastes and needs. Plus, in this economy, we should all be tightening our purse strings wherever we can. So try making your own brush roll and tell me how it works out for you.
