So you’ve decided to switch to natural makeup. Congratulations. You are one step closer to your goal of living a healthier life. Many women today are making the conscious decision of moving over to natural cosmetics. Some decide to do it for the betterment of the planet. Others because they simply have sensitive skin and natural works better for them. Whatever your reasons, it is important to understand how to buy natural makeup brands that are right for you.
What to Consider When Choosing a Natural Makeup Brand
Cosmetics companies are realizing that consumers today are more well-informed than they were before. And that today’s woman is concerned about what she puts on her skin and the effect it has on the planet. So many cosmetics brands are either in the process of or have already introduced a range of natural skin care products, including makeup. The result is that everywhere you look nowadays you will see a big brand boasting a new natural product.
I strongly suggest that you not take these claims at face value. No, I’m not being a cynic. I did some digging into natural makeup and came up with some uncomfortable truths.
Did you know that there are currently no regulations or guidelines that cosmetics companies have to adhere to when they manufacture or market their products as ‘natural’? Yep, that’s right. So basically, any brand can just slap on a label that says natural and it will not be questioned by the so-called regulating bodies or the end consumer i.e. you and me.
But times are changing. We now have the world at our fingertips because of the different forms of media. You have no excuse to take shortcuts or plead ignorance when it comes to your skin or your health.
The first step is to check the ingredients on the bottle. They should be mostly food ingredients. Natural makeup users go by this rule – if you can’t put it in your mouth, don’t put it on your skin. So the list of ingredients should feature herbs, oils, fruit, flowers, seeds, pollen, and things that you know exist in nature. If you are unsure of an ingredient, jot it down and go home and do some research on it.
Note that just because the product says ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ does not necessarily make it so. At least not entirely. If it says 100%, then there is a high probability that it is actually organic i.e. it contains no chemical ingredients and no pesticides or artificial growth enhancers have been used on it. If it does not say 100%, then there it is likely that around 5% of the ingredients are chemical- based.
Remember that preservatives are not natural. So if you see the words “added preservatives” anywhere on the product label, put it back on the shelf and walk away.
Although it takes a little trouble to ensure the veracity of any brand’s claims, the results you get from your makeup once you find the best natural makeup brand will be immeasurable.
