With all the hullaballoo about chemical agents in everyday beauty products, and the benefits of natural ingredients instead, I, like most other people, decided to opt for organic products. Unfortunately, the prices of most organic beauty products are sky-high, so I decided to try making some of them myself. Luckily, the Internet is a huge source of information, and after a few hours of searching, I ended up with a whole list of homemade beauty products that are easy on the pocket, as well as great for my skin.
Easy Recipes for Homemade Beauty Products
Here are some simple and cost-effective recipes for homemade products that are guaranteed to make you glow.
1. Moisturizer
The first and most important daily use product – moisturizer. Mix two teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil with the juice from one large leaf of aloe-vera and apply this mixture to your skin twice a day. Aloe-vera is excellent for dry skin, and olive oil helps seal in the moisture so your skin stays smooth all day long.
2. Face Wash
The next essential product on everyone’s list, a good face wash needs to be gentle, soap-free and preferably smell yummy! To make one at home that meets all those criteria, just take a teaspoon of honey and a half-teaspoon of lemon juice, mix well and apply on your face. Rub it in gently and wash off with lukewarm water. Honey is an excellent restorer, and lemon juice has natural astringent properties that tightens and firms up your skin.
3. Conditioner
For a really quick conditioner, scoop out some mayonnaise from a jar and slather onto wet hair. Leave it on for about 15 minutes, and wash off. Make sure it’s the kind that contains egg though, egg-free mayo is not as effective because raw eggs are natural conditioners. Alternately, mash up one large avocado and mix in one raw egg and use the mixture for deep conditioning. Just leave it on your hair for about half an hour before washing, and your hair will be super-soft and shiny.
4. Lip Balm
This is one of my favourite recipes since I don’t use much make-up but love lip balms in different flavours for all-day use. To make your own, just take 2 teaspoons of sweet almond oil, 2 teaspoons of melted beeswax, and a few drops of your favourite essential oil. I’d suggest flavours like vanilla and grape myself! Mix the ingredients together and pour into a little jar, and you have a nourishing and tasty lip balm ready to use.
All of these products can be made in slightly larger batches and stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. I usually add essential oils in my favourite fragrance for a little bit of extra indulgence.
A dermatologist once gave me the best advice for any beauty products to use – “If you won’t put it in your mouth, don’t put it in your skin”. The best thing about homemade beauty products is that you know exactly what they contain, and can pick what suits you best.
