Halloween is my favourite time of the year. It’s the only day when men, women and children of all ages dress up in the most outrageous costumes and skulls are not reserved for ‘punks’! There’s something magical in the air and your neighbourhood no longer looks plain and boring. Your neighbour next door has a graveyard in his yard and the house across has weird lights and music streaming out of the windows.
Yes, Halloween is probably the only festival where people try to outdo themselves in looking as scary, spooky or outlandish as possible. What’s not to love about it? If you’re going to a Halloween party, or hosting one at home, you want your costume to be perfect. However, the perfect costume is ineffectual without the right makeup, so here’s a quick make up tutorial for Halloween!
Halloween Make Up Tutorial in 5 Easy Steps
When you are picking a makeup style, the only thing you have to keep in mind is that it should match the outfit or the character that you are dressing up as. Also, ensure that the products you use to create your makeup will not cause irritation or rashes on your skin.
For this make up tutorial, I will tell you how to create the perfect makeup with ingredients that you will find in your kitchen and will cause you no harm.
Step 1: Clean your face and then apply foundation all over it. This creates a base that will keep your makeup in place and will give you an even canvas to work on. For smooth application, use a damp sponge dipped in foundation and then spread it all over your face and neck. If you are using makeup on the rest of your body, I’d suggest using a foundation base for that as well.
Step 2: Create a mixture of cornstarch and water in equal parts. This thick liquid is perfect for creating many effects and is also an excellent alternative to chemical glue. You can make fake blood by mixing red food colorant in the mix and apply wherever you feel like.
Step 3: By dipping thin tissue paper in the mixture and then sticking the tissue on your skin, you can mold it to look like an open wound. After it dries, just paint the inner edges dark red-brown and the outer edges a brighter shade, or use bits of yellow to make it look decayed. Create warts by pasting lumps of dipped tissue on your skin, then painting them a green-brown sickly colour!
Step 4: Create dark shadows under your eyes with black, dark brown, or dark grey eye shadow. I’ve found that blending some maroon or coral in the shadow make them look raw, as though they have just been rubbed and more realistic too!
Step 5: Use face paints to complete your look. You can paint your skin yellow-purple with green patches for a decayed effect, or just add patches of colour to imitate bruises, welts and dirt. There is no limit to what you can produce with your imagination!
If you’ve found this tutorial helpful, do tell me all about it. I’d love to hear the story of your happily horrifying Halloween!
